Rhythms, 2019
It is easy to interpret the natural world as inhabiting a space beyond ourselves. Through sight and sensation, that which exists beyond the perimeters of our physical body feels ‘other’ to us. There is self, and there is other. Modern culture reinforces this idea within us, placing material and mental barriers between ourselves and our natural environment. A richly animate world transformed into a maze of objects, perpetuating the illusion of dominion. This disconnected narrative adversely influences our perception of the world in which we belong, and is the root cause of the ecological crisis we find ourselves in today. We must confront the fact that our environment is interconnected with ever faucet of our being, sustaining and providing for us in ways we fail to recognize.
This series of work evokes a spiritual identity intrinsic to nature, magnifying that which can often be overlooked. Each piece asks us to slow down, and pay greater attention to the subtle ways in which the world communicates with us. Nature speaks through a language of subtle rhythms, which take on a nuance as compared to our busy modern lives. The work asks its viewer to question their own relationship with the Earth, and to remember the stories of the land from which we come.
